This one uses a blend of beats and space, using a delayed piano, with some nice evolving synth patches
and a punchy synth bass. The syncopated piano figure at the beginning was the seed idea and instantly
created the opportunity for interplay between major/minor seconds. I added a second piano part, which has
plenty of space, then the basic rhythm loop, which drives the whole thing along. Next came the bass, again
echoing the syncopation in the piano motif, after which I played with various piano layers. The sweeping
synth sound that plays throughout acts as a kind of glue for the whole thing and the final clincher was the
high sparkly evolving synth sound that adds just the right amount of interest without swamping anything.
The break in the middle, where the drums and bass drop out, had originally had the drums kept in and the
synth drop out. However, this made the rhythm feel lumpy and exposed: in the final version there is a
sense of anticipation before the rhythm returns, with an extra rhythm loop added for a little extra
momentum.
This piece, with its many layers and gradually shifting landscape could be extended very easily into
something more like a conventional track length of 3 to 4 minutes.
