This sounds to me like a Russian peasant tune (but I make no claim to any kind of authenticity)
I actually started out with the strings on this track, working from the melody outwards. As the harmony started to take shape, this in turn helped to consolidate the melody and fix its apparent genre leanings.
I used piano as a working tool to flesh-out the various parts and then found sounds that seem to sit more comfortably with the strings. Originally the tune was played quite low down by a solo viola but this didn’t cut through so well, so I added guitar, doubling on violin and some piccolo, very quietly with no vibrato.
