What I did here was played everything in one take as it occurred to me, not to
any click. I tend to do this initially, so as not to be dictated to by the software and so I
can find the natural tempo of whatever I choose to play. Then, instead of finding the
tempo and playing it again to a click, I simply used quantise to justify everything to the
nearest eighth note as in this case it was more or less in the default tempo of the
sequencer already.
Then I used a technique I've covered before in these pages, namely cut and paste into
new tracks and assign different voices without editing. I chose cello, as it covers the full
range of the notes played. Then I chose a marimba to replace the piano, as I found this
had more dynamic contrast and was less abrasive than the piano, making more space
for the strings. To this, in order to pick out the higher tones with more definition, I added
a viola section. As with the cellos, I chose a sample with short bowing, in order to pick
up on the rhythmic quality of the playing. To this I added a percussion section, which
gives some nice accents on timps and the odd snare beat as well.
