Here’s something with a little more space in it, which is a relief after the last couple of tracks.
I wanted to just play the repeated D octaves and see what came out. I found three little progressions in the
left hand that worked nicely and used them sparingly, returning to the D pedal in between. To this I added
the horns, which echo the piano quite closely, just expanding on the motif slightly in places and remaining
fairly sustained throughout. I played with adding some trombone but decided that it detracted from the
simplicity and space of the piece. Finally, I added the percussion to give a little extra colour and highlight
some of the dynamics.
There is an inherent tension in repeating anything musically. It’s a well-used technique in soundtrack to use
pedal notes to create tension and it’s fun to play with the disparity between consonant and dissonant tones
against the implied root.
