Composer's Blog
This began as a rather lame and predictable piano track but I decided to use it as an exercise in arrangement. Using horns to play the main melodic motif and trombones to provide the countering phrase (which comes in on the first repeat), I managed to steer myself away from my usual ’safe’ territory (’piano, plus strings, plus any suggestions?’). The strings were added later and I was pleased with the violins echoing the opening motif throughout and have striven to maintain ‘transparency’ in having independent lines that are clearly defined, as opposed to ‘blocks’ of harmony.
By doubling the basses with cellos and the strings an octave above during the ‘B’ section, there is a sense of expansion, which is quite filmic in its impact.
