Composer's Blog
This is the march that precedes the track 'Gone' within a recent theatre commission. This is clearly a fairly standard march, intended to imply a nationalistic anthem for a totalitarian regime (hence the title).
As mentioned in the blog for Gone, the initial ideas came from improvisation on the flute. Firstly, I looked for ideas that evoked a bygone time in mid Europe, so giving a folksy, wistful theme. From this I took some motifs to build the march theme. Having consolidated the melody line, this was initially doubled on horns, then came the fleshing out with tuba, trombones and trumpet and the whole thing is underpinned with militaristic snare, bass drum and cymbals.
The live flute has been blended with sampled flute and piccolo, to help the blending process and to fool the listener into imagining that all the instruments are played live.
