Here’s a simple piano piece to start the week. I only had a short time to do this one and have commissions
on the go, so it’s not the most evolved piece of music but nonetheless seems to work in its way.
I like the oscillating accompaniment that combines an alberti-bass style left hand with simple oscillations in
the right and avoids my usual heavy octave bass line tendency (is there a Heavy Octave Bass-line
Syndrome – ‘HOBS’, I wonder?). The melody sits above and intersects with this accompaniment, remaining
clear and steady, with no ornamentation, to give a well-defined theme. Listening again now, I’d like to
break up the rhythmic construction of the B-part melody a little. I might also be inclined to soften the tone a
with some gentle EQ or mastering and perhaps bring the melody down an octave for a phrase or two to
make the whole a little less brittle.
The tone is perhaps reminiscent of something like the ‘Amalie’ soundtrack, with a lightness of tone, coupled
with a persistent energy throughout.
