This is one I’d want to come back to and probably replace the drums and find something to echo and/or enhance the main motif (melody is too strong a word in this case). The initial idea came on the piano and was a dark, menacing chord progression, somewhat reminiscent of something Russian and romantic, I think.
Once drums and the synth bass were added, the mood changed somewhat and the result is almost like a dark blues. The lead synth has a pleasing phased echo which comes and goes unpredictably and lends some extra interest. The whole thing has been quite crunched to give a big and dark sound and I’ve used an unusual reverb setting, based on a concrete chamber, to enhance this feeling further.
