More sonic exploration today: so no easy listening I’m afraid. Again, I find it really useful to sometimes
forget about notes, chords, phrasing, rhythms and just immerse yourself in sound. Get stuck in and have an
explore. This is something that’s great to do with live acoustic sounds but if you work primarily with
software, it’s also useful to sometimes just have a play around with the programs, effects and processing
that are available to you. It all goes into the pot and could well prove useful when you need to achieve a
particular type of sound.
At school, I studied art A level and my teacher there used to make me work very quickly and in media that
weren’t comfortable for me. He was desperately trying to break me out of my comfort zone and make me
become more creative. In the event, I went and studied music! But then at university, the same thing
happened. We’d have performance seminars in which we were encouraged to swap instruments and create
random improvised soundscapes. At first, most people’s instinct is to take the mickey but then what
happens is that you’re silliness sparks your own curiosity and before you know it you become hooked on
the creative processes that are unfolding. Well I did anyway.
