It struck me, as I was playing this piece, that it is a very common opening and reminiscent of various pieces, including an old song that began ‘Grocer Jack’ and something by Debussy, I think (which is a curious coincidence, as I was working today on a sound logo for a client, which also turned out to be Debussy-inspired). However, the second phrase moves away from that opening and then the B part, though not wildly original, consolidates its status as something new-ish. I was going to do some arrangement on this with strings etc. but ran out of time, so have this one as a simple piano sketch.

It’s a constant in composing relatively commercial material that you think you have something catchy because you recognise it from somewhere else, or you think it comes from somewhere else because it’s catchy. I find that the best thing is not to worry about trying too hard to be original, as you then go against your instincts and impulses and end up writing intellectually. To my mind, the intellect should come in after the initial impulse has been explored. That is why I tend to record a free improvisation first when I start a new project and then use that as reference material once I start honing down the finished article.
