This was a lot of fun in the end and came about through exploring the audio patch templates in Sonar. I
decided to see what happened if I applied a drum preset to other instruments.
Initially, I found a preset that applies modulation, delay and something else to live drums and put the
opening guitar loop through it. That gave me the rather funky riff as a basis to work from. Next came the
drum loop, which I later doctored to fit the phrasing of the piece, to which I added the orchestra stabs to
give some extra weight and attack. Onto this, I put some piano twiddling (also patched through the same
effects as the guitar), before finding this rather lovely dub bass sound. With the incessant drive provided by
this rhythm section, I had the idea of adding some trombones but then couldn’t resist playing around with
them as well, putting them through modulation and bending the notes around for the sheer hell of it. On its
own that sounded a little lost, so i added some horns and an extra solo trombone for good measure, all
bending and swooping like demented bees.
What I enjoy about this kind of exploration is that, free from the constraints of writing to order, I can go
where the sound-scape takes me. By using patches that others have created, I also find myself delving into
areas I wouldn’t otherwise go. Enjoy.
