Composer's Blog

Sometimes you just want to dive in and get your hands dirty, without worrying about the outcome and as a regular working excercise for composers, I can thoroughly recommend it. If you’re always thinking of the finished product, it can be hard to immerse yourself in what you are doing and allowing things to take their own course. So every so often, just say ‘to hell with it’, throw everything in the air and see how it all lands.

This is pretty much what I’ve done here. I decided I wouldn’t start with piano today and had an idea I wanted to use different guitar sounds and probably involve a certain amount of noise and distortion (which always makes me happy). The net result was this half-baked track that reminds me somewhat of early experiences rehearsing with bands, whereby everyone would want to start playing as soon as (or even before) they’d set up their instruments and just jam. And why not? Playing for the love of playing and immersing yourself in the sound so created is one of life’s rich pleasures and not to be underestimated.

This is a similar process to the atonal piano improvisations I’ve also advocated on these pages, only less tonally experimental but generally louder. What comes out at the end of it is not the point. What is important is the process of creating and the awareness of possibilities this process throws up.
