Hey, I’ve invented a new genre: ‘ambient atonal prog-rock!’

I came rather unstuck with this but it’s really all about exploration and discovery: finding new potentials and possibilities. I like happy accidents and they often throw up some of the better ideas. In this case, in copying the original part to different soft-synth patches, I decided to throw in some drums to see what would happen. Initially I used a generic drum patch but found the general MIDI settings annoying, as there were too many rattles, shakers and bell-trees going on. So I went back to my old friend ‘Session Drummer’, as I knew this would only give me kit sounds. What I’d forgotten was that at the bottom end of the keyboard, this would also trigger some nice drum loops and fills. By happy coincidence, these kick-in when the music gets deep and dirty; sounding quite deliberate and planned.

Again, I’ve tried to find sounds that respond in differing ways to the material and that complement one another in producing a full spectrum of sound, from mallets with plenty of attack, to bass and swirly synth patches. It was hard to tame all this in this case, as the music is really quite dense at times. Again, I’ve used a lot of processing: some delays, a good deal of compression and a quirky reverb across the mix.
