Today I eschewed the piano altogether and went straight for some big, sustained, evolving synth sounds, which I then combined with some choice loops and a nice, pure sine-wave bass.
One feature of this piece is that it started out as purely soundscape, with no rhythm, so the synth parts move quite organically, rather than being dictated to by the phrase of the rhythm parts. Having said that, the underlying synth sound does provide a rhythmic drone when sustained, so this will have led to a logic within the movement of the parts that is related to the underlying tempo.
