What is interesting about the regime of daily composition (and/or improvisation), is that it tends to be
cyclical, depending on time constraints, mood and for all I know the phases of the moon.
So I'll find myself getting bored with one aspect of composing and production and then find myself switched
on to something else entirely the next day. This, I think, is one of the benefits of this practice: the constant
challenge to produce something of worth, coupled with the realisation that along the way there will always
be some disappointments but these feed back into whatever it is that makes the whole thing work
eventually.
Listening to today's output, I can hear that my experiments with various processing plug-ins has yielded
mixed results. For one thing, I have used a form of saturation that is intended to mimic analogue recording
and provide warmth. It has also created hiss and distortion, which in many circumstances would not be
acceptable. I've coupled this with some aggressive compression and I think that was really a mistake. But,
once again, until you push things too far, you don't know where the boundaries are. Rather risk and fail
than always play safe.
