I find it really cathartic from time to time to just sit at the piano and improvise with no agenda to see what
comes out. It can actually become quite a meditative and/or contemplative practice, so you can see that
the title - far from being just an amusing pun - has a somewhat deeper connotation as well. I heartily
recommend trying this, in the same way my old art teacher recommended doing very fast, bold sketches
and then throwing them away.
The difference in this case, of course, is that I haven’t thrown it away. The result may strike some listeners
as self-indulgent noodling but I’m personally always fascinated at the way in which the fingers and
subconscious mind work to make sense of a seemingly random flow of ideas. In this particular case, I have
anchored the whole thing by sticking to the B pedal, giving the whole thing a sense of tonal centre.
However, it is extremely liberating to throw caution to the winds and go all-out atonal in your
experimenting.
