We’re on dangerous territory here, especially with the company I keep (many being seasoned ‘traditional’
musicians). Firstly, there’s a good chance that I’ve inadvertantly knicked an existing tune and secondly it
may insult some sensibilities with its folksy pretentions. Having said that, Hollywood has used cod-Irish
whistles to represent everything from snowy wastelands to arid desert, so perhaps I’m in good company
after all.
I wanted to write something a little lighter than of late and this little ditty popped out. It seemed appropriate
initially to play just the melody in unison with various instruments in the folk tradition. I then found a drum
of no fixed ethnicity and added a pizzicato bass for a litle extra bounce. Then, of course, I heard Hollywood
calling and added the layers of strings. These, I hope give a broadening effect and suggest an expansive
landscape (see above) or perhaps an epic quest. It would be a logical next step to remove the initial
melody and write a variation, working it in as a counter melody, combining the two, later on.
