This one is essentially a rock-based track that came to me quite quickly but then needed a lot of work to try
to get sounding ‘right’. The problem is when attempting to mimic live sounds and particularly live sounds in
a given context. Trying to emulate a rock band, with all its energy and quirks, is quite a difficult task and
perhaps futile. It can be fun though and may throw up ideas along the way that are useful.
The underlying piano phrase presented itself and demanded to have a half-time rock feel applied to it. This
in turn wanted some growling bass and screaming lead guitar, which suggested overdriven organ as well.
With a second guitar to dirty things up further, I thought I was home and dry but the drums just didn’t seem
to ’sit’. In fact the whole mix has had a lot of processing applied, which I won’t go into as it’s quite tedious
but involves EQ, compression, limiter and delay applied in various ways throughout the mix, to both
individual instruments and the mix as a whole. But that still didn’t fix it musically. In the end, what makes
the track almost successful for me, is the use of double-time drum phrases, going back to half time during
the stepping unison sections.
