Todays’ track eschews loops and synths for a simple piano accompaniment and solo french horn. Whilst it’s
great to explore specific genres and styles in depth, it also feels good to move away from time to time and
try something else, so this is a slight departure from the past couple of postings, though consistent with
other previous tracks.
I wanted to deliberately break the mould of harmonic movement every bar, so had the piano holding on to
each chord a little longer, while the horn provides the melody. Within the piano is a lot of step-wise
movement, lending a little depth to the resultant harmony but overall the movement is minimal. I have
applied a reverb with quite a long decay to help spread the sound and put the horn and piano in context.
I’ve also taken a little off the top EQ-wise, to mute the piano sound (listen to film scores and you’ll hear this
a lot) and also soften the horn a little.
In an attempt to make the horn sound authentic, this remains entirely un-quantised and I spent some time
playing with ‘breathing spaces’ and phrasing to try to mimic a human performance.
