It struck me whilst producing ‘Dark Matter’ that it would be good to go a step further and remove all the
harmonic and most of the rhythmic constraints, to focus on pure sound. So I have used just one note,
played using a variety of synth sounds, as well as piano. The idea began on piano but I deliberately used
that part to trigger the others and have allowed it to become pretty much inaudible beneath the din.
You could well argue that this isn’t a composition at all, rather just exploration of sounds. That’s fine by me.
What I’m striving for is an ever more liberated approach to composing, which can mean anything from not
being afraid to write within a genre or style, to not feeling bound by the usual ‘rules’ of musical composition.
The discipline of composing daily, which I can wholeheartedly recommend, means that preconceptions
begin to drop away and you can give yourself licence to just produce something, safe in the knowledge that
tomorrow is another day.
By the way, the title is not intended to be rude, it merely refers to the fact that only the note F has been
used, with sounds occasionally moving off that tone as they evolve (OK, it’s also a little provocative).
