Another orchestrated piece today. The piano idea lent itself to a filmic treatment, so to save time I used a generic ’strings’ patch to lay down a ‘pad’ of block chords. Over this, I superimposed oboes, then individual string instruments, a flute and a clarinet. I had initially made a sketch whereby I had very quickly sketched in these parts. Then I went back and created each part individually, working one phrase at a time and trying to only add a new instrument where I felt it was needed.
One interesting experience on working with this piece was that I heard the high arpeggiated flute part whilst working with piano and strings. There were certain harmonics that leapt out at me and sounded very much like a flute playing these short staccato notes. So I went back and tried to play what i’d heard.
