This was inspired by the rooks (or were they jackdaws?) in the oak tree overlooking my house yesterday
evening. It was a fine evening and I was sat outside, enjoying the tranquillity (HGVs on the neighbouring
road notwithstanding), when all these birds started ‘chattering’. I’m not sure if it was some sort of mating
ritual: they did seem to be in pairs, though there was quite a group, with birds coming and going: in fact it
looked like some kind of wife-swapping party.
Anyway, the sounds made by these birds had quite a hypnotic rhythmic quality, which built and receded in
intensity and texture, according to which birds were involved and how animated they were. I’ve tried to
reflect these qualities in today’s track. Using ‘ethnic’ instruments seemed to make best use of the quality of
sounds, with their fast attack and just enough sustain to create a pleasing musical tonality. Adding the
rhythm track was optional but has put the whole thing into a kind of jazz-improv setting, which I rather like
(strangely reminiscent of St Germain to my ears).
