Here’s another synth-based piece, with no piano at all (hoorah!). The idea did begin on the piano but with
the chromatically descending lines, it soon became apparent that there was little space for extra harmony.
So this is essentially just a bass-line, doubled on various synths, with a melody over the top and some
rhythm loops. The point here is that with very dense synth patches, there is a lot of harmonic complexity
within the ’single’ tones, so actual written harmony is not always necessary or desirable.
To maintain interest, I’ve had each of the parts that follow the underlying bass-line shift octaves from one
phrase to the next and brought different rhythm loops in and out. There’s also a pause in the middle, as the
bass and lead synth are left alone on a repeated tone, whilst everything else drops away. The opening
sections then repeat. Having got the piece all but complete, I was left with a niggling feeling that something
was not quite as I’d like it. It then occurred to me to have the bass part echo the additional rhythm loop on
the repeat, lending extra emphasis to the weightier rhythm and giving respite from the otherwise sustained
bass tones.
