Sometimes I wonder whether I should be allowed to have this much fun? but then I decide that actually I’m
entitled to it after all.
This one has something to do with my altar-ego, I think: the frustrated rock-god within. It started, as ever,
with some noodling at the piano, which led to this rather pleasing and slightly dark chord progression. Once
I put bass to it, it became clear of the rock potential. With the addition of some hard-hit drums, this was
definitely the way to go. Then came the arpeggiated distorted guitar. Then the choir and finally the lead
guitar. The original piano part has been replaced by a guitar but is buried in the mix.
With something as big and epic as this, mixing was crucial. Originally the drums and lead guitar were both
somewhat too loud and this detracted from the ‘wall-of-sound’ effect I was after. By reducing these and
adding heavy limiter and compression, I was able to squash the whole thing into one happy blend of
loudness (it makes me happy anyway). Do try it at home: it’s a lot of fun!
