Here’s some more weirdness for you, created by improvising at the piano, largely playing clusters, using
variation between sustained and short bursts of sound together with the odd sprinkling of individual tones.
I’ve then used my old trick of copying the piano part to a couple of other patches. Here, I’ve used pizzicato
strings, harp and an orchestra. I chose these as they all respond quite differently to the MIDI messages, so
giving a kind of ‘instant arrangement’.
To further highlight the different responses to the original notes played, I’ve applied different types of delay
and modulation to each part. These enhance the effect of different sounds creeping in and out and also
moves them about within the stereo spectrum. I’ve applied a further delay to the whole mix, as well as
reverb, to bring the parts together into one space.
Although this piece was produced quickly and spontaneously, in the performance I have tried to pay
attention to the sound as it is being created and respond honestly and genuinely to what I hear. To me, this
is the essence of being creative, as opposed to just crafting something using a set of tools. You may wish to
debate this point.
