Today’s offering features pretty much an entire sampled orchestra. Since I’ve set myself the ridiculous task
of uploading a track each weekday, it’s a good opportunity to explore ways of working quickly and here I’ve
stumbled upon another handy technique.
Actually there are a couple of things to share with Sonar users here. One is the use of templates, which I’ve
been very lazy about setting up. I thought it would be useful to have a template set up for an entire
orchestra, with all the sounds patched, routed and stored in appropriate track folders. Using Garritan
Personal Orchestra, I’ve loaded the very useful pre-defined multis for each section of the orchestra, and
assigned a track folder to each. The whole thing is then stored as a template for easy recall and will save
an age in choosing and loading patches next time I want the full orchestral Monty.
Secondly, I’ve used Sonar’s ‘groove clip looping’ facility on the various MIDI parts, so that each repeated
2-bar phrase has only needed to be stored once. I wouldn’t actually tend to use this in a finished
composition but for exploring parts and their relationships it proved invaluable, as where a new part has
been added and a previous one then needed tweaking, I could go back and un-groove-clip the phrase,
make the adjustment, restore the clip and drag it out over the whole arrangement again.
