Composer's Blog

I’m probably in breach of all sorts of copyright laws here; so come on BBC – sue me, I could use the publicity.

Part of the reason for this departure is that I’ve injured my right hand (and probably shouldn’t be typing now), so didn’t want to be hammering at the keyboard last night. But also, I had the idea for this piece whilst listening to the news bulletin that I’ve used as its basis. Gordon Brown came out with a great repeated phrase, whilst trying to be heard above the din in the House of Commons and it gave the idea of creating a loop from it. In the event, I only used part of the loop and set this against other segments, including Big Ben and the news announcer’s voice, as well as more protracted sections of the broadcast.

I applied various delays and effects to the different parts and set the whole thing against a drum loop. I particularly like the idea that Gordon Brown saying ‘can anyone here??’ has become ‘can anyone hear?’, which seems wholly appropriate.
