Here’s another of ‘those’ tracks: piano, loops, synths, FX.
What I found interesting with this track is how the use of echo became almost a motif in itself. The opening piano ‘riff’ has delay applied to it, which was one of the last things to be done. This came about after having applied delay to the lead synth part, to create a little extra depth and spread and which in turn mimicks the way one of the overdriven guitars echos the piano? and so on. There are also some octave repeats of bass notes and the lead line repeats up an octave in places. So the whole piece is characterised by this kind of pulsating, brought about by the use of echoes (delay) and repeats.
Other than that, I’ve used sustained tones in the bass and guitars to contrast with the piano. The rhythm loops are layered and then deconstructed to create varying texture and density and I have created a breathing space by dropping out the more sustained sounds and some of the rhythm on the third repeat of the main ‘theme’. There’s little melody as such but the lead synth motif is well-defined and acts as an audio ‘anchor’ for the listener.
