This is a thoughtful little piece, which I’d started out aiming to make a little more through-composed than
my normal output. However, things didn’t go as planned and so it features a further exploration into my
improv-plus-arrangement techniques.
This time, I improvised a piano piece, then quantised and copied to orchestral sounds. Using Garritan
Orchestra’s mod-wheel function, I have shaped the individual instruments and also removed some of the
harmony within individual parts so that they play as separate lines. I’ve applied quite a bit of reverb to try
to make particularly the strings sound convincing. I’ve also stretched some of the notes in the string parts
so that they overlap a little, giving the illusion of whole sections playing with slight timing discrepancies (as
opposed to having clean breaks between notes, which sound especially unnatural in the strings).
